What we collect and what we do with it
Bizfari is a directory. Most of what is on it came from public records about businesses, not from you. This page says what we hold about people, why we hold it, and how to get it out of here.
Who publishes this
Bizfari is published by Powers Advertising, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Write to hello@bizfari.com about anything on this page, or to fix@bizfari.com to correct a listing.
The listings themselves
Business listings are built from public and commercially available business data — names, addresses, phone numbers, categories, hours, websites. That is information about a business, published because a business directory is a directory of businesses. It is not collected from you and we do not sell it as a mailing list.
If a listing names a sole proprietor whose business address is also a home address, that is a real privacy concern and we treat it as one. Ask us to remove it and we remove it. See taking a listing down.
What we collect from people
When you claim a listing or make an account. Your email address, a password we never store in readable form, and the listing you claimed. We use it to sign you in, to let you edit that listing, and to email you about that listing.
When you correct a listing. What you typed, and an email address if you gave one, so we can ask a question if the correction is unclear.
When you pay. Stripe handles the payment. Your card number never touches our servers and we never see it. We keep what Stripe tells us: that a subscription exists, when it renews, the last four digits, and the billing email.
When you upload a photo. The image, and an automated check that it belongs on a business listing. Images you upload are published on the listing you uploaded them to.
When you post a job. Whatever the posting says, plus a contact method. Job postings are public, and free.
Every visit. Our web server keeps ordinary access logs: IP address, time, page, browser string. They exist so the site can be kept running and abuse can be stopped, and they are discarded on a rolling basis.
Cookies and measurement
One cookie keeps you signed in. It does nothing else and it is not sold to anyone.
We use Google Analytics to count pages and visits. It sets its own cookies and Google receives that traffic data under its own policy. We look at it in aggregate — which towns get read, which pages work. Browser “do not track” and ad-blocking settings are honored by the measurement script; nothing on this site is designed to defeat them.
Who else sees your information
Four kinds of company, and no others:
- Stripe, for payments and subscriptions.
- Amazon Web Services, which runs the servers this site sits on and the writing model described below.
- Google, for the traffic measurement above.
- An email provider, to deliver the mail we send you.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We have no data-broker relationships. If that ever changes, this page changes first and anyone affected gets an email.
Writing done by machine
Some articles and summaries on Bizfari are drafted by a language model running inside our own Amazon Web Services account. Business data and published articles go into it. Your account details, your email address and your payment information do not.
Taking a listing down
Email fix@bizfari.com from any address and say which listing. We do not require you to prove ownership to have a listing removed — only to edit one. Removals are done by hand, usually within a few days, and the listing does not come back on the next data refresh.
Your rights over your own data
Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@bizfari.com and we will answer within thirty days.
If you are in California, that includes the right to know what we collect and why, the right to delete, the right to correct, and the right to opt out of sale or sharing — the last of which is already answered above: there is none. We will not treat you differently for asking.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our basis for the listing data is legitimate interest in publishing a business directory, and our basis for account and payment data is performing the contract you entered into. You may object, and you may complain to your supervisory authority.
Deleting an account does not by itself delete the business listing, because the listing is business information that existed before the account. Ask for both if you want both.
How long we keep things
Account and listing data stays while the account exists. Payment records stay as long as tax and accounting rules require. Server logs roll off. Corrections are kept so we can tell what changed and why.
Security
Traffic is encrypted in transit. Passwords are hashed. Access to the database is limited to the people who run the site. No system is perfect; if one of ours fails in a way that exposes your information, we will tell you.
Children
Bizfari is for businesses and the people who look for them. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
Changes
When this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. Changes that affect how we use information you already gave us come with an email, not just a new date.
